Kaling Confidence

By -

I have to tell you something before you read the rest of this blog post. I am biased. Very biased. At least when it comes to Mindy Kaling. I think Mindy Kaling is wonderful. She makes the top of my list of famous people to have over for dinner. I think if we met, we would be the best of friends. I also happen to think she has some amazing insights on confidence. Recently, she wrote an article—“Mindy Kaling’s Guide to Killer Confidence”—for Glamour magazine and shared her secret to being confident. The article was an excerpt from her new book—“Why Not Me?”—which was released on September 15, 2015.

So here are some of Mindy “My Future BFF” Kaling’s thoughts on confidence:

  • Hard Work: “Because confidence is like respect; you have to earn it.” If you are willing and do the hard work required, you should and will be confident. You will exude confidence because you know what you are talking about, deserve the credit, and have shown your dedication.
  • A Tiny Bit of Bravery: “People get scared when you try to do something, especially when it looks like you’re succeeding. People do not get scared when you’re failing. It calms them.”  You can’t let people who are jealous of your success get the best of you. Your winning makes them feel like they are losing. Don’t feel guilty for your success, but more importantly, don’t let their negativity affect your confidence.
  • Be Entitled: If you do the work and are brave, you can legitimately feel entitled. Entitlement exudes confidence. Feel comfortable with being entitled.
